Who Should Star in the Movie Version of The Fault in Our Stars?

If you haven’t read The Fault in Our Stars, a new novel by John Green, you’re missing out — on saying “aww” six million times, falling in love, and feeling damn lucky your cells haven’t turned savage on your insides. It’s a book about teenagers with cancer. While that may not sound like the most uplifting beach read to slip in your tote, it’s an ambitious and affecting piece.*

Enough people like it that it’s been #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list since it came out over a month ago, and the film rights have been optioned by Fox 2000. In honor of the movie news, Anna and Jenna got together  to cast the film for them (you’re welcome, Fox!). There aren’t any explicit spoilers, but please you don’t read further if you’re worried about that.

Hollywood has needed new casting directors since it chose an actress in supple, beaming health for Katniss from The Hunger Games, who is supposed to be from a starving, sooty slum. Stephan Lee of Entertainment Weekly’s Shelf Life blog suggested Shailene Woodley for Hazel Grace Lancaster, the narrator, but this would be a similar mistake. Hazel is sick. She wouldn’t look sixteen going on twenty-five going on Playboy. Here are a few actresses are both talented and real-looking enough to take on what would be a hell of a role:

Hazel Grace Lancaster

Elizabeth Olsen

Dakota Fanning

Tavi Gevinson

Tavi’s a fashion blogger, not an actress, but what can’t that girl do? She also have the distinct advantage of being close to Hazel in age. I may just have put her on her because her look and her smart-teenager sassiness remind me of Hazel.

The real dreamboat of the book is, of course, The Boy, Augustus Waters. By swoon-worthy description:

“Long and leanly muscular, he dwarfed the molded plastic elementary school chair he was sitting in. Mahogany hair, straight and short. He looked my age, maybe a year older, and he sat with his tailbone against the edge of the chair, his posture aggressively poor, one hand half in a pocket of dark jeans…Look, let me just say it: He was hot.”

This hottie would also have to have some great acting chops, as you’d agree if you’d finished the book. Our picks:

Augustus Waters

Aaron Johnson

Anton Yelchin

Matt Prokop

This involved a lot of me Googling “brunette teen actor,” which will be a little embarrassing when the FBI goes through my Internet history. Matt Prokop is Rocket Man from High School Musical 3, so we know he has the charisma. The snap-crackle-pop of energy between Hazel and Gus is what audiences will really need to believe.

Also integral to the story is the reclusive author of An Imperial Affliction:

Peter Van Houten

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Jeff Bridges

Hugh Laurie

There are some other important characters that would make rich roles for the right actor: Isaac, for example, and Hazel’s parents. Who are your picks for Hazel and Gus? Are you excited about the movie, or wish it’d stay as a book?

*I loved this book. It is somehow both lush and spare, with writing so lovely I didn’t notice it until I was moved by it. But I actually have some really complicated thoughts about the piece, and whether it bears more than pedantry and quote-book melodrama. Book club, anyone?

  1. my vote is Logan Lerman for Augustus Waters! He’s the best, and looks like Aaron Johnson’s doppleganger (sometimes). He also has a reputation for being crazy funny in his movies (ex: Percy Jackson).

  2. I see your Dakota Fanning, and raise you the much more whimsical and less Hollywood-ified Elle Fanning, with whom I am sort of obsessed. I think Tavi would actually be an amazing Hazel, though. She’s got that wry, old soul vibe that just screams, “Have childhood cancer. Over it.” Also, re: Philip Seymour Hoffman. DUH and also heck yes.

  3. I just got through watching a movie called “Beware the Gonzo” the main character Ezra Miller seems like a great fit for Augustus. His voice sounds like i would imagine him and his acting seems versatile. He is also in a darker film called “We need to talk about Kevin” Because Ezra isn’t this well known actor i feel like he would be a great fit.

  4. I loveall your Augustus suggestions, but I raise you Taissa Farmiga for Hazel. Quiet gaze, natural beauty, and very talented actress that’s only starting out. Saoirse Ronan has had many adaptions.

    • Had to look up Taissa Farmiga, but some quick Googling reveals that yes, I agree! Thanks for reading and for the good suggestions. (Although I’m still mad at Saorise Ronan from “Atonement.” STUPID BRIONY, THEY COULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY.)

  5. Here’s another suggestion: Hailee Steinfeld for Hazel and Logan Lerman for Augustus! Hailee’s age is nearer to Hazel and she’s a very good actress (nominated for True Grit). Logan looks young although he’s 20 yrs old. He has the looks for Gus. As for the acting department, he is also very good. He tends to perform better in drama projects (He did very well in 3:10 to Yuma, My one and only, Jack and Bobby – TV Series, and currently starring as charlie in Perks of Being a Wallflower). 😀 Jeff Bridges or Philip Seymour Hoffman are good choices for Peter Van Houten. 😀 Dakota is already playing role similar to hazel (Now is Good).

Other suggestions for Hazel and Gus:
Shailene Woodley, Saoirse Ronan, Lizzie Olsen, Elle fanning
    Douglas Booth, Aaron Johnson

  6. Umm.. personally, i’m all Saoirse Ronan for Hazel. For Gus, Logan lerman. I don’t think any other male actor could play his character

  7. I’m halfway through the book and I would know that Logan Lerman will be PERFECT for Augustus Waters and Saoirse Ronan PERFECT for Hazel Grace. I tell you this actors will be great for the roles.

  8. Ezra Miller is what I imagine Augustus be. I mean, he won’t have to act beautiful, intellectual, witty, eloquent to the point of sometimes being pretentious, because that’s what he really is in real life. Plus he is an amazing actor that has unbelievably attractive, good looks.

  9. Have you seen logan lerman as charlie in perks? He is phenomenal – smart funny vulnerable all at once combine that with his witty and snarky acting as Renee Zellwegers son in my one and only. And the perks breakdown scene was really good. I could see him bringing the same kind of intensity to gus’s breakdown scene at the gas station.plus his voice is probably the closest you can get to augustus. Logan and elle or taissa or saoirse for me. And get stephen chbosky to direct it too.

  10. Logan Lerman IS Augustus Waters, no one else could possibly do him justice. As for Hazel, I think Brianna Cuoco would make an EXCELLENT Hazel, i really want it to be her, but it’s unlikely considering she’s not super well known.

If anyone’s curious (she also gorgeously fits Hazel’s appearance)
    here she is:

  11. not to comment again, but i don’t know if i’m alone in my opinion of not wanting a super well known teen starlet to play hazel. i love the character too much, you know? i’d rather it be someone relativley unknown, but still a good actress.

I’d really like to raise awareness/ get feedback on the Brianna Cuoco suggestion.
The webseries I posted a link from is produced by Hank Green, so if he knew, and he could mention it to John, then maybe…:) well, i don’t know, but here’s hoping 🙂

  12. I’m going to quote the book here.
There are books which you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like betrayal.
So, in conclusion, I want it to stay as a book. Especially since I hear the would-be director of TFiOS was the Twilight director, so that’s definitely a turn-off.

  13. NO, NO, NO. I CAN´T IMAGINE ALL THIS GIRL FOR HAZEL. But Logan is Perfect for AUGUSTUS and Hugh Laurie is undoubtedly perfect for Peten Van Houten.

    • I thought Emma Watson when I first read the book. I think she was one of the few asked to audition. She doesn’t have the chubby cheeks though, so I thought Mae Whitman should be Hazel. Mae even has the green eyes and page-boy haircut!

  14. I have been a great fan of ‘The Fault in our Stars’ since a month after its release date. I was ecstatic about the news of it being turned into a movie. Elizabeth Olsen would have been my choice if I had not heard about other actresses involved. I really think Mae Whitman would be the perfect Hazel. She has the chubby cheeks, the green eyes, and the page-boy haircut. As for the boys, I heard Logan Lerman was asked to play for the role of Gus and I think he’s perfect! I find Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be great for Van Houtan. He has the alcoholic look to him, plus he’s round as described in the book 🙂
